But...I'm mustering up the courage. I have a coupon to Pier 1 and they have a napkin sale going on, so I am going to take the plunge... I reread this post for confidence, and thought I should tell you, haha! Thanks for the confidence that it can be done with kids. Mine have taken to ripping their napkins anyway, so we are going through WAY too many paper napkins. Thanks for being so inspiring!Katyahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15896862149383857313noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6212550248931823866.post-92012047798452342472013-02-23T16:32:18.188-05:002013-02-23T16:32:18.188-05:00I've also never bought paper napkins for our h...I've also never bought paper napkins for our home. We have two sets of green napkins that we use every day, and two sets of white that we use as backups or when I want to set the table nicely. The white ones have some stains, but mostly they bleach clean. I just throw them in with whatever load I'm doing - green with the colored loads, white with the light loads. We also use placemats with every meal because our table scratches easily, so those get washed after most meals. James has a laminate placemat since his gets dirtier :)Ariellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07387915625669864067noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6212550248931823866.post-29216178662280231302013-02-22T21:30:29.022-05:002013-02-22T21:30:29.022-05:00I haven't joined the ranks yet, but after read...I haven't joined the ranks yet, but after reading this post i am interested. In the past I've used some on a trial basis but noticed that every time I use a cloth napkin, it usually is not absorbent, but rather smears things around. Are there any absorbent ones on the market? Any thoughts?Rachel and Adamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16924615365001104885noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6212550248931823866.post-73691505672351233062013-02-21T18:23:31.078-05:002013-02-21T18:23:31.078-05:00It's just my husband and I, no kids, and we ha...It's just my husband and I, no kids, and we have been using cloth napkins for years. I initially bought 16 cream cotton ones (four sets of four on special). I've also made a few pairs out of patterned cotton fabric and been given some as well. These are our everyday ones and I wash them once a week, with tea towels, dish clothes etc on a hot wash, sometimes a hot soak wash. I used to iron them damp and hang on a rack to dry, but I don't iron them anymore. I just fold and smooth. Having enough that you don't have to wash too often I think is key to be happy using them. I too use dark and patterned ones for food like tomato pasta sauces!Fiona Ferrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01493105915055099408noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6212550248931823866.post-29401869331118422442013-02-21T15:26:51.428-05:002013-02-21T15:26:51.428-05:00Oh, I love all of these thoughts! You can either get all one color or (like I do)get several different colors.

Cloth napkins are fun! They wash up just fine, and we save the actual hemmed napkins for those fancy days :)Drives grandma nuts but the un-hemmed napkins kid all six of us tidy.MA Fhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18156855913030661957noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6212550248931823866.post-81969589089053815592013-02-21T11:26:21.425-05:002013-02-21T11:26:21.425-05:00We have three different sets of napkins that don&#...We have three different sets of napkins that don't match at all. We use them until they run out, and then supplement with cloth if necessary. I only wash them once a week. I suppose I should make or buy a few more!

I remember thinking about using them in the beginning, and thinking that I couldn't start using them until I had enough to get through the whole week. But then I reasoned that I would still be saving money/reducing waste even if we used just the few we had each week before using the paper ones. I'm glad I was able to get over that mental hurdle.Diannahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09517246579704472278noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6212550248931823866.post-26019053963899423172013-02-21T11:16:56.363-05:002013-02-21T11:16:56.363-05:00Yes! We have some that are fancy, that we only pull out for a few occasions a year, and the rest are a whole smattering of patterns and solids since I love setting the table each evening. I have a cabinet that holds cloth place mats, tablecloths and napkins :) I typically make my own napkins, buying cotton gingham at the fabric store. I am NOT a seamstress, but with a hot iron and some straight lines of sewing, they are easy to make. I have some that are large, that we use most nights, and then I make small, square ones that we keep on our counter in a metal napkin holder that fits cocktail napkins. I like to make some fun napkins for the kids with fabrics that they choose, and then buy several fabrics that coordinate and many of those stay on the counter in the napkin holder to be used at breakfast, tea, or whenever needed...

We typically use one throughout the day, then I toss them all in the laundry and wash on laundry day. I sew more than we need (I think I have ten large and about 18 of the little ones) that way I don't have to do wash each day. I like to hang them to dry if the weather cooperates. :)Jane G Meyerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02604599012397877776noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6212550248931823866.post-14893590430270283922013-02-21T10:49:57.075-05:002013-02-21T10:49:57.075-05:00We've been using cloth for several years, thou...We've been using cloth for several years, though we do have paper for backup, because I don't wash them as promptly as you. I save up a week's worth of napkins and wash them in one load together with the dish towels and tablecloths and microfiber cleaning cloths (our substitute for paper towels) -- I have a rack in the basement where I let them dry during the week. I agree, bold colors and patterns are better at hiding the stains. I have several sets for everyday and some that are for company. Thanks for this discussion -- it's interesting to see what other people do. I gather them up at the end of the week and wash them with wither my sheets or towels. Even with sitting for 5 days or so they come out clean and stain free. We have a set of eight red ones that we use when eating anything with tomato sauce, and a set of a dozen colourful flowered ones for everything else. I've found that patterns last longer than solids, as stains aren't as visible.

We use the same napkin all day (unless it gets really messy :), and after dinner is cleared away we leave them to soak in cold water overnight. In the morning they go into whatever laundry load I'm washing first, then hung to dry.coffeemammahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11804187391150113879noreply@blogger.com
