First Haircut...

Little Man got his first haircut today! It was really more of a trim but that counts, right? Father John wants to work on it a little more with different sized attachments on the clipper. It was pretty difficult to snip and buzz with such a wiggle worm... Any tips from those of you who cut your children's hair yourselves?

My 22 month old is agreeable to a haircut if Daddy goes first!

A good backup hairdresser when before your eyes it all goes terribly wrong!!! :) (I speak from experience) Still, I'm sure your first attempt was much better than ours. My husband and I have great fun cutting our sons hair. Lots of laughter and merriment, although perhaps a little less from the recipient.
Mat. Emily, I've recently found your blog and have to say it is a real treat to read. Definitely up there amongst my favourites. :)

My husband started cutting my little man's hair around 13 months. He strapped him in the high chair with a big (safe) lollipop and went to work. Since then he has gotten a little better...he actually "pretends" he is cutting his own hair sometimes ! Any "forbidden" snack works for our guy.

I should add, however - that his started out quite long. The idea was for a trim. That was what I AGREED to at the time. He started "trying out some different attachments" and ended up with basically a crew-cut. Lucky for him, I think he looks cute !! One attachment, easy job for them both now !

best of luck. Can't wait to hear how it all works out !

I cut all of the hair in the house (including mine!). I do the boys with an electric clipper. It has multiple attachments so I don't give them buzz cuts. I mostly try to be quick and do the most important things first. Sometimes you have to settle for second (or third) best! Especially with the toddlers.

No advice for doing it at home, but both our boys LOVE getting their hair cut. We made a trip last week to neaten up before their birthdays. You could probably tell in those pictures. DS2's was a little too short-- no more curls!

And I thought my son was a blondie! Love those golden tresses. :)

My oldest boy needed haircuts since he could sit up on his own! I would sit him in the bathtub with water in it and let him play while I sat on the edge of the tub and snipped away. Yeah, it made a mess of the tub but he was mostly still.

I've been cutting my son's hair since about 5 months old (neither of my kids have ever lacked hair, and I'm a firm believer that little boys should look like little boys!), and the past year+ I have cut his and my husbands. I use a pair of clippers, its gets it done evenly and quickly. My son wont sit still to save his life anymore though. I just do it quick as possible! I cut his fairly short for summer, #2 in back and #3 on top, making sure it's blended well. and make sure the neck and around the ears is done well, it makes all the difference!

I doubt that it would be any help to you, but my busy 10 month old just had his sixth haircut. I had been cutting it during nursing sessions as he fell asleep. I'd cut half of his hair one session and the other half the next session. A couple of days ago, I cut it in the kitchen sink as he was entertaining himself with measuring spoons. He still squirmed a little, but he was stiller than his usual self.

The first trim came while our little one was asleep. That was easy because it was just a straight cut across the nape of the neck to defuse the growing mullet.

Since then, my mother-in-law the stylist has used electric clippers to give him a mohawk. The sides are the #1 guard and the stripe is a larger number of some kind. It's easy to simply hold him in your lap while grandma swipes through his locks. No need to remain too still that way.

I'd completely forgotten I used to give them little trims when they were asleep! That was fairly easy. Although you had to put up with a lopsided look until the next nap!

I gave my boys haircuts this morning. It was a less than stellar experience: (http://prayingwithmyfeet.blogspot.com/2010/07/like-sheep-to-shearingor-was-that.html)

Try an engaging video. It may just keep his attention long enough for you to get a little stillness for each snip :)

I have always cut my boys' (and hubby's) hair myself - their spectrum issues mean there's no way anyone else could do it - even now that they're 12 and 9. I only use scissors and a comb - (again their issues mean that they can't handle the buzzers) - and we get through it. When they were little I would cut it while they slept.... When I cut it at my mom's they get to borrow a hand-held video game, which really helps. :) But that's not something that is an option at home. Don't worry - cutting boy hair takes practice - but I don't know how much money I've saved doing it myself all these years! :)
