Strega Nona's Harvest?! I have never seen that before. We love Stega Nona here. I will have to see if my library has it.

So do you own all of the books in your learning baskets? or are they also from the library?

I would say that right now it is about 50/50 for books we own and books we borrow. We are blessed that we have many family members who give us books as gifts as well as a Nana (my mom) who is a pre-school teacher and gives us her Scholastic Order Forms monthly. To be perfectly honest, it has been very difficult for me to find quality children's books at our libraries in the area. They seem to have more dvds/videos than children's books and their book sales are full of GREAT children's books by wonderful authors (dePaola, Polacco, etc.). They just aren't borrowed anymore... people are just interested in twaddle:(

Strega Nona's harvest is a brand new book! We really liked it!

Hello Mat. Emily,

I just recently found your blog and I'm really enjoying it. I love your learning basket idea!

I'm in the process of trying to organize our homeschool books. I'd like to organize them in baskets by theme...Do you have any tips on this? Do you keep your books in basket by themes (and if so where do you get your baskets?), or do you just bring them out into a "learning basket" when needed? Thank you so much! :)

Blessings,
Kat

Hi Kat!

Thanks for your comments. I am so glad that you like my learning basket idea. I really want to start this up again for my little ones... especially since I did most of the work for the summer topics this past year.

I have a large bookcase that I use for our children's books. We don't fill every shelf yet (we're getting there, though!), but I have the books arranged pretty simply on the shelves. Our top shelf is for books that we haven't grown into yet (like chapter books). The next shelf down holds fine art books (mainly art and music)as well as our collection of High Five magazines. The third shelf has all of our science and social studies/history books on it (my mom is a pre-school teacher and often orders books for us from Scholastic like ones on the seasons, weather, rescue vehicles, etc.). The fourth shelf has all of our story books books on it and the bottom shelf has the anthologies. We also have a small bookcase filled with board books and over-sized picture books. In addition, I have a bookcase with my books on it and the bottom shelf holds books that we are currently reading or will be. We have a basket full of religious books (we are growing out of that though and will need a shelf soon) and several other baskets around full of themed books (like the learning baskets or Dr Seuss, My First Little House, etc.) and library books.

I hope that helps! Let me know if you need more detail!
