Christy...

For the past few weeks, I've been enjoying an episode or two a day of the Christy series. Since I borrowed it from my mother after Easter, I am trying to watch it as quickly as possible while still savoring each episode. Here are some of the things I have been dreaming of since watching the first dvd:
  • Long, full skirts with a sweeping train
  • Fields of wildflowers
  • Cooking over a fire
  • Living in a rustic cabin
  • Teaching school in a one room schoolhouse
  • Wearing my hair like Christy does in the above picture
  • Ribbon and lace trim on pristine white blouses
  • Long, rambling walks through the woods
  • Homemade watercolors made from plants
  • Eating and reading by candlelight
  • Long, white nightgowns
  • Dangly earrings
  • Fences and gates made from branches
  • Persimmon orchards
  • Drawing sessions in a meadow complete with watercolors and an easel
A hardcover edition of the book by Catherine Marshall is on my Paperback Swap wishlist (Click the PB Swap button on my sidebar to join!)... I can't wait to read it again!

Has anyone watched the Christy specials (A New Beginning and A Change of Seasons) that followed the TV series? Are they worth it?

I've never seen the TV series other than a stray episode, but I have seen the movies. I like them, but it will probably depend on how loyal you feel to Kellie Martin, Tyne Daly, etc. I liked seeing Christy's story brought to a close....IIRC, the original series didn't finish the story. The series and films are on my Netflix queue...I haven't seen them for a while, so my memory could be a bit rusty.

So funny you posted this, I just started rereading the book yesterday evening!

They are very good but they were done by a different producer and they have actors other than Tyne Daly and Kellie Martin in them.

Christy is one of my all time favorite books. It was the first "big" book I had my daughter read when she was old enough.

I used to be quite obsessed with the Christy TV show. I used to own all the episodes. The movies were "satisfying" because it did bring the story to a close but i don't think they were as well made as the TV shows.

I liked the doctor best and he stayed the same. The TV Series was best, but the movies are worth watching. I have fond memories of running upstairs to the parsonage after church on Sunday (or waas it Wednesday) evenings to watch Christy.

it was wednesdays! I have the same memories of rushing home to watch Christy!!And yes, for all my time spent obsessing over this show as a young girl it was mainly because i had such a crush on the doctor and wanted him to get saved so badly so he and Christy could actually get married like they were supposed to. :)!

Christy is absolutely my favorite book! It makes me dream of all the same things. When I was in third grade I had a teacher that I thought looked like Kellie Martin (looking back, she didn't), and every time I read the book again I imagine Mrs. M as Christy. If you like this book, you might also like Julie, Catherine Marshall's other fiction novel. Have you read it?

No, I haven't read Julie, Mrs. R. I will definitly add that to my reading list though! Thanks for the suggestion!

I just snagged Julie on PB swap... thanks for the recommendation, Mrs. R!

I didn't like the movies as much as the series. The quality is not as good. However, like everyone else has said, the doctor is the same and he is excellent.

I may have a hard cover of "Christy". I'll go see.

My mom and I would watch "Christy" every week when I was growing up. I fell in love with it and even read the book. I have to agree that we too wanted her and Dr McNeil to marry. I do know who she married in real life, but I won't spoil the surprise. Anyhow, you might be interested in checking out this site:

It is somebody's personal webpage about who was who in the real land of Cutter Gap (AKA Chapel Hollow). I found out about a month later that I had (or maybe have) Irish relatives who settled in nearby in those mountains. Enjoy!

I love how you have added 'link within' to your blog. I keep finding so many interesting and inspiring posts! And lists..I'm a list person, too. It's fun to read and think, I'm not the only one who dreams of using only natural light and candle light and living in an old-fashioned cabin!
