Maternity Clothing...

Several weeks ago, Jamie asked the following question:

Speaking of maternity clothes though. I am just entering my second trimester and can easily get away without maternity clothes yet BUT where did you find attractive and MODEST maternity clothes when you were pregnant??? Everywhere I look it is the same stuff....sleeveless (which I don't wear) and short...no longer dresses or skirts at all. And prints that I would never wear...and everything accentuates the breasts....an area that needs no extra attention in my case. HELP!!!!!

Congratulations, Jamie!! I hope that you are feeling well and that you are enjoying this time of your life! I'm sorry it has taken me so long to answer your question.

When I was pregnant with our little one, I used my "regular" clothing as long as I could. Since I am tall (long legs!), I wanted to keep my skirts and pants because maternity stores don't sell things that are long enough. My solution for this was to buy the Ingrid & Isabel Maternity Bella Band in white. When I wore it, it looked like a tank top peeking out from underneath my shirt. I bought mine online through Nordstrom (teacher's gift card!), but recently saw similar ones at a maternity store for about half the price.

For tops, I wore plain teeshirts and a sweater or two from Motherhood Maternity and a few prettier tees and tunics from Gap. After going through the pregnancy, I would definitely recommend the tops from Gap. I think that they held up better and kept their color through multiple washings. Since I couldn't afford more than a few pieces, the quality had to be excellent and I found that with the Gap shirts. In addition, since I am well endowed, I wore several tank tops that had pretty trimming to keep things a bit more modest.

I hope that helps!! Let me know if you need more detail!

Although I do not dress modestly (according to your readers standards) I have found great maternity clothes that would work for here at Target. Cute sweater sets etc. As for dresses, I have found a few that would work for her at Old Navy. Also, check Goodwill and thrift shops. I just got a Motherhood Maternity blouse for $4.50 at Goodwill.

If you only get big around the middle, you can buy the elastic stretch bellies at a craft or fabric store and insert them on your regular clothes - not hard, it's straight line sewing. If you tend to gain all over this might not work.

I've found the best maternity clothes at Goodwill or thrift stores. I hate the new "belly baring" look! I also wore broomstick style skirts with elastic or drawstring waists. When you get too round, you can always wear it under/over belly and I can wear them nursing and non pregnant too.

I found a really cute, long jean skirt at Motherhood with my last baby. I gave $20 for it and it was worth every penny. I bought longer skirts with elastic waists a couple of sizes larger than my pre-pregnancy size for church and nicer events, but I wore that jean skirt every day for five months, and bought some cute maternity tops from places like Motherhood (on sale!), JC Penney, Sears, Target, Old Navy and even Ross or TJ Maxx. I also bought one nice dress from Motherhood for a Christmas event I attended.

I managed to get modest clothing at Motherhood Maternity, but it is definitely a big search. One of the staples that got me through my pregnancy (I am now eight months pregnant and they still work) are the long wrap skirts from tznius. www.tznius.com. They do fit different from when you are not pregnant, but they work.
